We just shipped version 2.0 of the Dogskin Fishing app, and it's a real one. Live weather at the lake. Depth contours on a map you can actually read. An Apple Watch companion for quick-logging catches when your phone's in the dry bag. Offline maps that work when cell service doesn't. And a catch log that remembers every fish, every waypoint, every day you were on the water — for years.
It's free on the App Store. It's built by the lodge, for guests and for anyone fishing Canadian shield lakes.
Why We Built This
We've been running trips at Dogskin Lake Lodge for over 55 years. In that time, we've watched guests try a lot of different tools for finding fish, tracking catches, and planning around weather. Paper maps. Gas-station atlases. Downloaded screenshots of Google Earth. Handheld GPS units from 2008. A dozen different fishing apps that were either great for bass lakes in Texas and useless here, or free apps that had 12 ads and sold your location.
We wanted something built for our lakes. Something that knew the depth contours of Dogskin and Mannifrank because we actually surveyed them, not because someone guessed. Something that worked offline because cell service doesn't exist out there. Something that remembered where you caught that 28-inch walleye last August, so you could go back to the same rock next year. And something that didn't get in the way — the best fishing tools are the ones you barely notice.
So we built it.
What's New in 2.0
Live Weather at the Lake
The new Weather tab shows real-time conditions at Dogskin Lake — not at the nearest airport, not averaged across the region, but at the actual coordinates of the lodge. Temperature, wind speed and direction, humidity, cloud cover, UV index. The forecast goes 10 days out so you can plan what to pack before you fly in.
The part walleye fishermen will care about most: a 24-hour barometric pressure history chart with a rising/falling/steady trend arrow. Pressure matters for how walleye feed, and having a real chart beats checking your phone's built-in weather app (which shows pressure at the nearest city, not the lake). We're not going to tell you when to fish — the chart just shows the data and the guides interpret it.
Under the hood: the lake data refreshes every 10 minutes during the fishing season, straight from Apple WeatherKit. That infrastructure also powers the live conditions page on this website, so you can glance at the lake without even opening the app.
Depth Contours You Can Read
The map view uses real depth contour data on top of satellite imagery. Not vague shading — actual contour lines at meaningful depths. Your current position shows both depth and boat speed at the top of the screen. When you're drifting a ledge, you can see the drop-off under your boat in real time.
Full coverage for Dogskin Lake. Mannifrank Lake also has depth data.
Catch Logging That Remembers
Tap the "+" button to log a catch. Species, length, lure, depth, water temperature, notes, photos. GPS location is recorded automatically. Your catch shows up as a marker on the map so you can find the spot again next year, next trip, next decade.
You can attach multiple photos per catch. If you're signed in, your catches and photos sync to the cloud, so a lost phone doesn't mean a lost season. If you prefer to stay anonymous, the app still works — your data stays on-device.
Apple Watch Companion
The Apple Watch app is for the moment you've got a fish on the line and your iPhone is three feet away in a dry bag. Quick-log a walleye or northern pike with a tap from your wrist. See your catch counts for the day. Glance at your current depth and speed. It syncs to your iPhone when you're in range — no cell service required.
Offline Maps, Everything Cached
Download the lake map before your trip — or when you arrive at the lodge and jump on Starlink WiFi — and the app works without cell service for the rest of your week. Depth contours, waypoints, catches, everything you've saved, all available offline. Sync resumes the next time you hit WiFi.
Sign in with Apple, Google, or Nothing
Four sign-in options: Apple, Google, email, or anonymous guest mode. Pick whichever you're comfortable with. All four are equally supported. You can upgrade from anonymous to a real account later without losing your catches, waypoints, or photos — the data just transfers over.
How to Get It
Search "Dogskin Fishing" on the App Store, or tap this link on your iPhone to open the listing directly. Free. Works on iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. Requires iOS 17.0 or later.
If you're a guest coming up this season, you don't need to do anything special — the app works for everyone. If you want your catches to show up on the Dogskin leaderboard, we'll help you connect your account to the lodge when you check in. No lodge code required.

What's Next
We have more planned. Depth data for the other outpost lakes (Noname, Black, South Eagle). More weather detail — rain radar, cloud layer, wind forecast overlays on the map. A way to share your trophy catch with your group without making everyone take a screenshot. Maybe even fish tracks over time so you can see where the walleye moved across the week, not just where you caught them.
For now, download 2.0 and go fishing. We'll see you on the lake.
